2021 Habits

New Habits in 2021

With 2021 well underway I have been trying to incorporate new habits to survive during the ongoing pandemic. I learned a lot in 2020 and I am determined to take the lessons I learned for a better 2021.

One thing I have learned from quarantine is how to slow down and stop long enough to listen to what I and my body needs. One of the first habits I adopted in quarantine was to take long walks every day. Since there was not much else to do outdoors I began walking and I quickly started realizing the benefits of getting some sunlight and fresh air every day. It has given me time to reflect and some time to occasionally listen to a podcast. I have now created the daily habit of walking 10,000 steps a day. There are some days I don’t reach my goal but for the most part I stay focused and walk as much as I can every single day.

I also picked up some bad habits during quarantine that I will be working on correcting in 2021.  One of them has been stress snacking and drinking alcohol more frequently than I would like.  The refrigerator and kitchen are literally steps away from me at all times. In 2021 something I have been working on is cutting up vegetables and snacking on those throughout the day. One especially stressful day I resorted to stress eating a huge bowl of carrots.

One of the main habits I want to continue with in 2021 is doing breathing exercises every day. A while back I was introduced to Wim Hoff breathing.  This type of breathing is one of the only ways I am able to slow my thinking and have my body relax.  After doing this type of breathing I can feel all my tense muscles relax and I can finally think clearly. I have suffered from anxiety since I was 12 years old so I need to do this deep breathing every day to slow my mind and focus. One goal that I have been trying in earnest to achieve has been to wake up early, before the kids, so I can focus on myself and have a quiet start to the day.  Overall my main goal is not just to survive in 2021 but to thrive!
